Why Creating a Studio Setup is Harder Than It Looks? Part 9... Learning Curve
May 23, 2026
The short answer is…
You are not solving a design problem.
You are solving a communication problem visually.
Most Live Streamers and Podcasters misunderstand the REAL learning curve in creating your studio setup.
Strong studio designs are typically not created and built overnight. They are a result of the hidden skills that every great Live Streamer or Podcaster have learned by experimentation and creative feedback.
These learned creative skills follow a creative arc that goes something like this…
Frustration… Awareness… Improvement… Mastery
#1 Frustration…
This occurs due to the lack of either knowledge or skills on how to setup their background for their cameras, lighting and audio. Oftentimes this frustration can lead to a creator blaming his or her gear and falling into G.A.S. (Gear Acquisition Syndrome).
#2 Awareness…
Knowing that your set design is working typically comes from hitting the record button or the “GO Live” button and then going back and watching the playback with a critical eye. It also can come from your viewers pointing out a problem with your lighting, camera settings or audio.
#3 Improvement…
This is the step where you take the constructive criticisms and your own observations and wash it through what you have learned about composition, lighting, framing and your backgrounds story telling and make the necessary adjustments or changes to improve your set design.
#4 Mastery…
In all honesty you never truly master set design. You are always learning, experimenting and testing new things in the visual pallet. But by putting in the rep’s you build and exercise that critical eye muscle leading you toward…
– Better Composition
– Better Lighting Instincts
– Better On Camera Presence
– Better Background Storytelling
There is no technical shortcut. You cannot purchase your way into a great background set design.
No one masters their background set design overnight. It takes time to develop your own personal tastes and the skills to implement them.
Listening to outside sources such as your viewers can be a great resource in getting your background just right as well as putting in the rep’s. Sometimes we are so close to it that we can not see the forest through the trees as they say.
Do not fear the learning curve, embrace it, we all have to go through it. You will be better for it at the other end of it.
If you are just starting down the Live Streaming/Podcast path,
Let's talk and see if I can help you navigate through it all.
Until the next installment...
