Why Creating a Studio Setup is Harder Than It Looks? Part 10… Solving for Identity

The short answer is… 

You are not solving a design problem.

You are solving a communication problem visually.

Communicating your identity is the real friction point when creating your Live Stream/Podcast background.

As an established Content Creator or a Business Professional, you are not looking at your background set design and asking “Does this look good?”

The real questions being asked are…

– Does this represent me professionally?

– Does this align with my brand positioning?

– Will my audience take me seriously?

How do you as an established Content Creator or Business Professional accomplish this with your background set design?

– By following the process of designing for the camera instead of your eye.

– By following proper lighting techniques and practices.

– By answering… who is this for? Why should I trust you? Is this worth my time?

– By finding that “Sweet Spot” of middle ground between Competence/Authority and Personality.

– By creating depth both visually and within your content.

– By being heard clearly both audibly and internally.

– By making good use of the space you have.

– By not blaming your equipment for problems with your background but leaning into proper techniques, principles and practices.

– By leaning into the learning curve that we all must go through.

Being clear on who you are, whom you serve and what you offer, is the single best starting point to designing your Live Stream/Podcast background set.

It's not just about getting your Logo in the background or your brand across to the viewer but to show them who you are and how you can help them with whatever it is that you provide an answer for.

It may take a few tries at getting the background designed to achieve what it is that you need it to achieve, but that is OK.   You are not the first nor will you be the last but by following some well established techniques and good practices you WILL. 

Remember, you are balancing visual branding, technical production, spatial design and audience psychology all at once.

No one gets it right on the first try, but in time and a little effort you will find that “Sweet Spot” that says everything you need it to say without a single spoken word.
