Studio Sunday #4, Set Design, What does it say to your audience?

If you are already live streaming or podcasting, do you know what your set is telling your audience? Most Content Creators and Business professionals do not.

Your set design should be planned on purpose. It should feel subtle, but still be clear to the viewer.

Here is a simple summary of the purpose of a Live Stream or Podcast set...

- The main purpose of the set is to show the identity, professionalism, and tone of the show, while keeping the viewer’s attention on the host and guest.

- A well-designed set helps build trust with the audience. It shows that the show is serious and good quality, which makes people more likely to respect and listen to the content.

- Good set design also creates a mood using lighting, colors, and background items. This helps support the topic or brand of the podcast.

- Depth and separation between the people and the background are important so the video does not look flat. Depth can be created by using a lens with a low “F” stop, and separation can be created by moving farther away from the background.

In the end, a podcast set should not be random decorations. It should be a carefully designed space that supports the message, builds the brand, and keeps the audience interested without distracting from the conversation.

There are different levels of set design. This can be as simple as sitting in front of a plain wall with basic lighting, a microphone, and a camera, or as advanced as a full professional TV, live stream, or podcast set built on a sound stage.
