Mic Mondays #3 ... The Mic And Your Space

My aim for this post is to open your mind to the microphone options available to you for your voice and your location.

The location you Live Stream from plays a large role in which microphone you should use.   Is it a small to medium size boardroom, is it a dedicated space in your home office, or is it a large presentation hall?

Each one of these locations has a specific audio feel to it.   

The boardroom typically will have tables and chairs, some pictures on the walls, maybe even a little sound deadening treatment.

The home office style there will be a desk, chair, bookcase, wall hangings, carpet on the floor and drapes over the windows.

The presentation hall will have hard floors, rows of seats and maybe the walls sound treated.

Your choice of microphone will be different for each location.   For example, you would not want to choose a condenser directional mic for the presentation hall as the echo/reverb in the room will just be amplified to an unusable level.

So which type of microphone do you choose for each location?

In general, for a home office location, if you have some outside background noise at your location, a dynamic microphone would be an appropriate choice.   If it is a quiet dedicated space then a condenser desk mic would be a great choice.

For the boardroom, if it is a dedicated presentation room, and it has some sound treatment an overhead condenser shotgun mic would be a good option as it affords the presenter the ability to move around a bit and not lose the audio.   Otherwise, a wired or wireless lavalier microphone is the way to go.

For the presentation hall, this one is the toughest.   In this location, the biggest issue is dealing with the echo/reverb.   Typically a wired or wireless dynamic mic is the better choice.   If the hall is not too large then a wireless lavalier mic can be used.

Microphone choice has many nuances associated with it.   Often it will take a few mic choices until you find the right one for you in your location.
