********* Live Stream Crashed? ******** ----------> Why Plan B isn’t Enough <---------
Mar 25, 2026
Live streaming has a lot of moving parts. At any given time, one of them can stop working when you least expect it.
In the past 8 years, I have done many live streams. The only problem I have not had is a computer crashing during a stream.
I have had problems with microphones, mixers, wireless mics, cameras, streaming software, and platforms. I have even lost power in the middle of a live stream, and everything shut off.
So how do you get ready for this? Backups!!!
Start by thinking about what could break while you are live, and what you can fix quickly.
Most live streams use a camera, lights, a microphone, a computer or device with internet, streaming software, cables, and power.
First, cables. Always have extra USB-C cables and HDMI cables. Also keep extra power cords, power strips, and extension cords.
Next, your microphone. Have a second mic ready. Plug it in, test it, and keep it muted. If your main mic stops working, you can switch to the backup right away.
Now your camera. Many people use a good main camera, but it helps to have a webcam ready as a backup. Set it up in your streaming software so you can switch to it quickly. Cameras can lose power or batteries can die.
Lighting is next. Even a simple shop light with the right bulb can work as a backup if your main light stops working.
Computers and software can crash at any time. If you use streaming tools like StreamYard, Evmux, Restream, or Riverside, you can log back into your stream from another device like a phone or tablet.
But what if the power goes out?
For most people, the stream will end. But if you are using streaming software, you may be able to rejoin from another device.
The only real way to protect against a full power outage is to run your setup without the main power grid.
This is not as easy as using a UPS, because some computers may still shut off when it switches power.
Another option is using batteries and an inverter to power your whole setup. This system runs all the time, so if the main power goes out, your stream keeps going.
This setup is not for everyone, but it can work.
So now the question is: what is YOUR backup plan?
Let me know in the comments.
